FAQ
so many questions...
Here are some (largely made-up) question I hope I can answer fully. If you have any additional questions, please email me at randy AT plemel DOT com.
- What is this all about?
I'm glad you asked! 88 in 24 is a photo-journey around the state of Ohio, visiting all 88 counties in 24 days. - Why Ohio?
I grew up in Ohio, and having lived in other parts of the country, I have come to appreciate Ohio and its' variegated landscape and culture. Whether by nostalgia or curiosity (or both), I simultaneously know and don't know, Ohio. I want to learn more about it, and show others what it is all about. Also, I like to travel, and while Ohio isn't known as a huge travel destination, there still exists locations off the beaten path, where wonder and excitement still lies. (and I like to travel) - Why 24 days?
Well, I work full-time, and I think this is around the longest I can get away with skipping out on work. I would love to spend more time exploring Ohio and documenting what I find, but both finances and time don't allow for that. But instead of a hinderance, I see this as a creative contraint - how in-depth can you get in 24 days with a subject as big as Ohio? - So, you want to travel around Ohio... and do what, exactly? That is an excellent question, glad you asked. I plan on taking many, many photographs of Ohio and Ohioans, which I will post right here in this website. A self-published photo-journal is also in the works, as well as a show both here in New York City and hopefully in Ohio.
- Do you really think people will want to buy a book about Ohio?
Well, I figure some of my friends will - if I beg them to, and hopefully some of the 11.5 million Ohians will want to buy a book about their state. But really, I see this as a challenge - both thematically and artistically, but also a test of entrepreneurship. - What kind of photographic equipment will you use?
Well, I shoot mostly on film at the moment on my trusty Canon SLR, but for this type of work I was thinking that full-digital might be the way to go. The total cost incurred for film & developing is about the same as the cost of buying a digital SLR. Either way, I will also bring my pinhole camera and my collection of vintage cameras handed down from my grandfathers since digital isn't the right tool for every job. - Vintage cameras?
Yes, I have a Nettar 515/2 from Granddad Saum, a Brownie Box camera from Grandpa Plemel, a few Lubitel 166's which all take 120 (medium format) film. Also a Zero Image Pinhole which takes 4x5 film. - How can I help?
